Different Genre Trailer Deconstruction- Going the distance, Wall.e and Buried

Romantic Comedy- Going the Distance

Sound
The music used in the trailer is mostly happy and upbeat. This shows the audience that the film will be a romantic comedy. There is always an order of emotion and this is shown through the music as well as what’s in the shots. To make the emotion of the film come through in the trailer, the music has been changed, so that it’s not just one song throughout the whole film trailer. In one part of the trailer, the music adds to the comedy of the film, this is when the two main characters are kissing and the male's dad starts playing take my breath away by Berlin. This adds a comedy effect into the trailer. The music is almost always in the background of the trailer, this helps the trailer flow better. The music changes volume depending on whether there is speech from short clips of the film. There is no voice over on the trailer, all the speaking is from short clips in the film. There is both diagetic and non diagetic sound effects in this trailer. Examples of diagetic sound within the trailer are the talking of the characters. Examples of non-diagetic sound is the cars, music, plane flying, swishing sounds, the click in the tanning salon when the spray tan is applied to the main character and the crunching of food, there is no music in the background when the crunching of food is played, this is because it shows the awkward silence, shock and disgust of the rest of the table when the woman eats the food.
Lighting
The lighting of the trailer is mostly natural lighting, it’s bright and happy. The bright lights are shown in the club scene of the trailer and the two colours of the strobe lights are yellow and blue, this shows both happiness and sadness. This is basically the general mood of the film trailer. There is artificial light when filming is indoors; this makes the trailer looks more realistic. The lighting is never very dark, even in scenes when its set at night, it’s still quite light. The lighting goes very dark and grey when the main character leaves her boyfriend; this makes the shot sadder, and sets the mood of the trailer. At the beginning of the trailer, the two main characters are having a date outside, and all the car lights are shining towards them whilst they are sitting down, this makes the shot look very relaxed and realistic. The red and orange lights in the tanning salon also show that something bad is going to happen, as the red is a very bright red, donating danger, and romance.
Mis-en-Scene
There are a lot of medium close up’s used, these show the body language of the character and the facial expressions, this gives the audience a clear idea of what the character is feeling. Over the shoulder shots are also used a lot throughout the trailer, I felt as though this made the trailer seem more realistic and less staged. Reaction shots where used, to show the reactions of the characters, panning shots were also used, this gives the audience a clear idea of the environment the characters are in. Also, the film is about a couple having to have a long distance relationship, these panning shots show the audience where about they are, the male being in New York and the female being in San Francisco. This is shown by panning shots of high-rise buildings (New York) and a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco). The speed of the shots is quick, especially when it gets to the middle of the trailer, this causes excitement, as it makes you automatically think that a twist is about to happen. A painted picture of high rise buildings is used quite a lot as a transition, it breaks up the trailer and it also links in with the film, so it works well. There is also an animated red plane flying across the shot when this transition comes up, this also links with the storyline of the film, without giving too much about the film away. A spilt screen is used to show where both the male and female are, this is usually shown when the couple are on the phone, or on webcam. It shows both of them and their reactions with a better flow, rather than having to keep flicking back to both the shots. Same font is used all the way through the trailer, this makes the audience of the trailer familiarise with the name and font of the film, so that when they see the font again, they will suddenly think of the film trailer. A animated map of the USA flies across the screen, there is a red dot where the female character is flying from and shows the line to where she is flying, this shows the audience how far away the couple will be from each other, this will make the audience ask themselves questions, for example: would I have a long distance relationship?
Editing
A double screen is used at the beginning of the trailer to show the names of the characters, this shows it’s going to be a comedy, as this is a usual convention of a comedy. Quick and fast edits show time flies when you’re having fun, as all the shots are of the couple together being happy, this is then followed by the male character saying ‘’6 weeks too fast, I like you’’ this shows that they have spent 6 weeks together and it has gone fast, therefore the editing has gone fast. Apart from fading to black and  the animations, there is no transitions, it just goes to the next trailer, this makes you aware of the time that the couple have spent together, it also works well, if a fade to black was used it wouldn’t fit in with the genre of the trailer. When the fade to black transition is used, this is when the female character says ‘’don’t you trust me?’’ this shows that something bad may happen, and makes you feel sympathy for the couple, it’s also used when the female character is in the airport. Over all this is a good trailer, I would personally find it hard to think of a good storyline for a rom-com, as sometimes the same storyline is used over and over again, and I feel as though it would be quite hard to think up a storyline that hadn’t been already made.

Animation-Wall.e
Sound

The music changes depending on the emotion the film makers want the audience to feel, and also the emotion of the characters. There isn’t always music throughout the trailer. This breaks up the trailer and makes it flow better than if it had the same music repeating in the background. When there is something adventurous going on in the trailer the music is fast and has a lively beat to it, this tells the audience that something adventurous is happening, and also that the film will have adventure in it. The voice over at the beginning of the trailer sounds like the voice of David Attenborough, this links in because as the voice over is playing, there is a picture montage of plants, stars and galaxies, and it sounds as though it is going to be a documentary about space. Also the voice of the voice over is calming and would instantly draw attention to the trailer. The love song At Last by Etta Jones is played when the main character Wall.e see’s EVE, the female lead, this tells the audience there will be a connection between the two characters. A lot of non-diagetic music is played throughout the trailer there is; the voice over, mood music, robotic sounds, crashes, sighs, bangs, screams, robot voices, high-tech noises, cheers, fire extinguishers, metal clicking, wheels, bounce of paddle balls, rocks smashing, swishing (this is when female lead EVE is flying) pinging sound (used whenever the cockroach moves around), danger sirens. With the film being an animation I’m not sure whether there would be diagetic sound, as it is all edited in., but if there is/was it would be the speech of the characters. The Great Escape music is played; this explains the storyline of the film. It’s also brings an element of comedy to the trailer.  A lot of emotion is shown through the sounds and music used throughout the trailer.
Light
The lighting is fairly dark when there are shots in space; this makes it obvious to the audience where the character is. I think that everything will have to be fairly obvious seeing as thought the film is aimed at children of a young age. When on the earth the lighting is bright and dusty, this shows the earth is dirty and has been taken advantage of, this links in with the storyline of the film, as all the people have been evacuated to space because a large corporation Buy N Large have created a lot of waste and destroyed earth. Wall.e is used to clean up the earth. What looks light natural light is used all the way through the film except for when they are on the spaceship, everything is bright and colourful. This links in with the fact that the spaceship is fake and artificial, just like the lighting used on the ship.
Mis-en-scene
At the beginning of the trailer, there are shots of galaxies and stars, this familiarises the audience with were the film is set. Also makes it obvious that the film is set in space. ‘’From the humans who brought you Cars, The Invincible, Finding Memo’’ This use of text used with in the trailer will instantly attract the attention of young viewers who like those films, The names of the films are also in their font, which will make them instantly recognisable without a fan even having to read it. The background that is used for the text about the film has a space background in it; this keeps with the theme of space and ties in all in. I also noticed that at the end of the sentence, which has the letter E, the letter is put in the font of Wall.e, I will show this in some print screens of the trailer. This makes the audience familiarise themselves with the logo of the film. This font also links in with that of a mass company which the creators of the film made up.
Editing
Fade to black is used, this transition is used well as it makes the audience feel as though they don’t know what is going to happen next, when the transition is over, makes you feel like you have come out of the blackness and you know what will happen next. Shot zooms into the earth, this shows the other environment the film is set in, also shows the state that the world is in and gives away a small piece of the narrative. A lot of extreme long shots are used, this shows the surrounding which the character is in, in this case the earth, shows how messy the world has got, and this keeps on giving away small pieces of the narrative without spoon feeding the audience. Long shots are also used; this gives perspective and context within the shot. There is a close up of Wall.e’s robot hands clasping together as though he is holding hands, this gives emotion and shows great detail, makes the audience concentrate on what the makers of the film want you to concentrate on. There is also a close up of Wall.e looking up towards the sky, the reflections of stars are in his eyes and this keeps with the space theme. It also shows that he is looking up at the sky hopefully, as thought something from the sky will change his life. There is a lot of zooming in shots, this concentrates on an important area, and for example where Wall.e lives. Over the shoulder shots are also used, this makes the trailer and the characters seem more real, This also adds to realism in a different sense, this makes it feel as though you are standing behind the characters listening in to their conversation.  The camera follows certain objects quickly, for example the shuttle Wall.e is trapped in, the shot those goes inside the cabin and shows the panic of the character, this makes the audience feel panicked and rushed. The trailer, towards the end is fast paced and gives the emotion of excitement.

 Crime and Gangsta- Buried
Sound
The sound for this trailer basically consists of both diagetic and non diagetic sounds. Diagetic sounds that are used in the trailer are, the sound of a lighter being turned on, heavy breathing, gasping, screaming and talking. The non-diagetic sounds used are the music that is used in the background of the trailer, swishing sound effects, banging, heartbeats, the clock ticking, mobile phone beeping, and the voice of the person on the phone, the music in the trailer is mood music, this creates panic and tension.
Lighting
The lighting all the way throughout the trailer is bright and artificial; the main light sources are coming from torches, lighters, matches, and a mobile phone. The light is only concentrated on certain areas, and the lights flicker, this creates realism and makes the trailer a whole lot scarier. There is no natural lighting in this trailer. The fact that it is in the dark makes it scary because a lot of people have a fear of the dark, this makes you wonder what would happen If you were in that position, being alone and in the dark 6 foot underground.
Mis-en-scene
The darkness creates tension through the audience. The colours used throughout the trailer are black, brown, red and blue. The black and brown are dark and this helps the audience to concentrate on what he is doing instead of what he is wearing, it’s not distracting. The red shows danger, this is coming from the torch and the blue shows mysteriousness and the unknown, he doesn’t know who he got there and what’s going on. There is nothing in the background that is distracting, this makes you just concentrate on the character. The lighting is also guiding the audience where to look at; the light is mainly focusing on his face, phone and watch. The brown shirt that the character is wearing blends in doesn’t distract the eye. There is not much within the shot, just the character and what he is doing.
Editing
At the beginning of the trailer, there is a close up of the characters eye, this makes you wonder what is going on. Fade to blacks are used a lot, this creates tension because you don’t know what is going to happen when the next shot pops up. A lot of medium close ups are used, this shows the expression on the characters face, also this links in with the narrative of the film, he is buried 6 feet under in a tight space, the use of close ups and medium shots make the trailer seem more real. Alot of zooms are used, and at the end of the trailer, there is a zoom out, this shows the character lying in the usual corpse pose, lying flat on his back and with his hands crossed over his chest. Makes the audience think, what’s happened? Is he dead? There is a range of quick shots and fast paced edits.  The text used has a dirty brown, rusty looking background. The text used is white and bold. There is a circle of light around the text, this links in with the lighting used in the shots.
